Introduction |
|
The Psychology department was inagurated
in March, 2003. Prof. Muhammad Yaseen took charge as the pioneering head of department.
The first batch started in March, 2003 with 41 students. The classes were initially
set up in the Chemistry Department and then in Johar Block. In May 2005, the department
shifted to the Ghazali Block. The department collaborates with the Fountain house
and Psychiatry wards of Meo hospital, Services hospital and Jinnah hospital in Lahore
where students make frequent visits with respect to their clinical research and
report writing experience in the course of clinical psychology. The department also
enjoys collaboration with the well known and world largest hospital in mental healthcare
and services i. e. Punjab Institute of Mental Health, Lahore. Every student is required
to carry out an in-depth study of five patients in partial fulfillment of their
clinical psychology course. The authorities are cooperative enough and allow students
to visit every year. The students, besides taking case histories, also try to provide
patients with some entertainment activity by the end of their stay. Annually, a
mental health week is also celebrated to improve the awareness of people about mental
illness and its treatment. Different seminars and conferences are conducted in the
week for enhancing the understanding of mental problems. The mental health week
along with furnishing the department and people with information, also provides
entertainment in form of a social evenings. The department has three major labs
for the students to incorporate different aspects of studies. There is an Experimental
Psychology lab, Neurological Lab, and Psychological Testing Lab. All of these provide
in-depth knowledge to students about the courses they have learnt. They carry out
experiments and apply tests and get a first hand experience of psychological equipments.
The department also provides counseling service to the locality. All those who approach,
are given counseling and clinical services that they need without any financial
gains on the parts of the department. A Students Resource Centre has been established
which makes available a lot of books and CDs to the students which are scarce outside.
It also contains thesis and different Psychological Journals which are not readily
available otherwise. |

PSYCHOLOGY,
WHY? |
|
The ever growing complexities of nature
and nurture form basis of endeavors to unmask the underlying realities. The establishment
of the Psychology Department was in response to this very essential need and to
produce students with such in-depth knowledge which could cater to these crucial
issues. The word psychology has been driven from two greek words psukhç, meaning
"spirit, soul"; and, logos, meaning "knowledge". It is a discipline involving the
scientific study of mental processes and behavior of humans and animals. Psychology
is both an applied and academic field. Psychology is a research oriented discipline;
research in psychology seeks to understand and explain thought, emotion, and behavior.
Psychology is the Science of Mental Life, both of its phenomena and of their conditions.
The phenomena are such things as we call feelings, desires, cognitions, reasoning,
decisions, and the like. Applications of psychology include mental health treatment,
performance enhancement, self-help, ergonomics, and many other areas affecting health
and daily life. Psychology's subfields encompass basic research (often done by biological,
developmental, cognitive, personality, and social psychologists), applied research
(sometimes conducted by industrial/organizational psychologists), and clinical applications.
By and large, psychology is a subject that widens your horizon for understanding
your own and other's thinking, feelings, and set better communication patterns,
the whole thing collectively enhances the quality of living.
